“ Really enjoyed this place. Simple restaurant, but still has some ambiance. The food is where they truly shine. The pork was especially flavorful. Highly recommend for a date! ”
“ Sovereign Modern Thai Cuisine is a Michelin Guide spot serving up some authentic and bold Northern Thai style dishes. This spot is located right next to a dog park and some apartment complexes where there is street parking all around. Reservations are highly recommended as they do tend to get booked up pretty fast. Wifey and I had dinner reservations for 5pm and were seated right away upon arrival. Inside, they have a gorgeous setup with Thai inspired decor and about 7-8 tables and bar seating. As for their menu, they have the classics along with a multitude of signature, chef inspired, rice, soup, and salad dishes. We opted to try the New York Steak Beef Tallow Fried Rice, Massaman Lamb Curry, and a Raspberry Lychee Mocktail to wash it all down. Everything we had was beautifully presented, packed with bold spices and flavors, and very filling! Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience here and are glad we got a chance to check them out. All of the staff here are very friendly, welcoming, and attentive. This spot has a great ambiance suited for a nice date or an elevated experience with family and/or friends. Best Thai food in SD? You be the judge! ”
“ Great food and fast service. Came here on a Tuesday and made a reservation just in case because I read sometimes it can get busy, but thankfully it was not too busy on a weekday. The restaurant is a good size with a classic sit down ambiance. Parking was street parking only but they had quite a few metered spots available on a weekday evening. I was impressed with the food we ordered. I recommend ordering family style so you can try more of the delicious dishes. Between 4 people, we had the crispy pork belly, crispy Thai chive cake, pomelo Thai salad, grilled angus ny steak and beef tallow fried rice, duck curry noodles, pad Thai and mango sticky rice. The star standouts were definitely the crispy Thai chive cakes (we ordered a second one because we liked it so much), the grilled angus NY steak and the mango sticky rice. I am a huge Khao Soi fan and the duck curry noodles were pretty much a version of it. I'm not a huge duck fan so wish it was just made with chicken instead but that's the only thing I would change. Usually there are a few dishes I'm not super impressed with but everything we ordered was a standout. Definitely will be back! ”
“ Amazing Thai Food - Worth the Trip! This was hands down the best Thai food I've ever had! We ordered the papaya salad medium spicy, and while my mouth was on fire, I couldn't stop eating--it was that good. My absolute favorite dish was the coconut soup, but the beef tallow fried rice was also a close contender. Everything was packed with flavor and so well-balanced. The service was great, and even though my fiancé and I are sad that this place is far from us, we'll absolutely be coming back the next time we visit San Diego! ”
“ I had lunch here when I was on a day trip, and this place did not disappoint! We had a reservation for 12:30, arrived around 12:15, and got seated at 12:20. This place requires a credit card for reservations, though, so make sure that you can go before booking! Food: We ordered a Thai tea, mushroom larb, and Massaman lamb curry. We asked to split one Thai tea into two different cups, and they happily obliged. It was on the sweeter end, but it was so good that I wish I had ordered one for myself! The mushroom larb was surprisingly large. It was light on the stomach compared to the other dishes, but the taste was extremely refreshing. Our main dish, the Massaman Lamb Curry, was delicious. The flavor was enriching in the curry, and I couldn't get enough of it. The lamb was also tender, and there was a generous amount of it. Thankful for the bread on the side because the curry itself was just so good. Prices were a little higher than I expected initially, but after eating the food, I can see the value and believe it was worth it. Service/Ambiance: It was pretty full when we came for lunch, but our waitress was attentive and nice. Service was fast, and I really enjoyed the vibe. Location was next to a park, which was nice since we went on a walk afterwards. Lots of people outside playing with their dogs or just going on jogs. Street parking was available, and there were trolley stops nearby. Overall: I will return to this place when I'm back in the area! I don't have Thai food often, but for the flavor, price point, and location, I would return back when I'm in the area. ”
“ Sovereign Modern Thai! Ben going here for years before covid and before they were recognized by Michelin guide. Their good is consistently great. Not good, not subpar..... great. You know how when u go to one restaurant because you're craving something specific? Well, at Sovereign Modern Thai you can go wrong with all their dishes. Do I have a favorite? Several! My go to, beef tallow fried rice and sirloin steak... perfectly seasoned and not over powering topped with fried crispy garlic and shallots and freshly chopped green onions. The steak: not your typical regular no flavor steak. It's marinated u get a little bit of char a balance of salty and sweet (I'm guessing from the fish sauce and a Lil sugar?) Whatever and however this steak is marinated, it's a perfect flavor of everything ;smoky, salty, sweet. It's not a dish you'll find at any Thai restaurant... I have several favorites so I can't say just one dish. Every person I've introduced this place has loved it and now made it their go to spot. Every ingredient placed on all these dishes down to chili saté is home made. AND they're consistently great! It's rare to find a restaurant that has more than one or two great dishes! Sovereign Modern Thai does it right and they do it well. Today, I was craving the Laos Angus New York Beef salad. They Steak was cooked to a medium rare tossed with the toasted rice powder, lime, fish sauce, a Lil sugar, Mint and Cilantro. Served with Romaine Lettuce and topped with red onions. If u want protein and greens this is it. It's usually more protein than greens, but that's normal and I'm not complaining. I also had their chicken fried rice cooked in beef tallow and man.... it's been a minute since I've had great chicken fried rice. When I tell you each grain was perfectly seasoned and not dry or too wet....sheepshead! And the chicken...I rarely order chicken because let's be real. It's always dry and overcooked and hard to chew. Not here. Juicy pieces of chicken in the beef tallow(fat) fried rice was amazing. I'm not basic, but this chicken fried rice!!! Call me basic but feed me that fried rice! I also had their dessert, smashed bananas served with coconut ice cream and fresh coconut milk and for texture, crispy toasted slices of coconut! So good. What i appreciate about Sovereign Modern Thai is that each ingredient is thoughtful and purposeful. They know what they're doing. Don't take my word for it... give them a try. You'll fall in love. ”
“ The papaya has a kick yall, I know it's spicy but we ordered mild and that was the most I could handle. The food was delish and the restaurant looked so pretty. We made reservations beforehand but we also got there pretty early in the day, so we were the first group in. There was so many things I wanted to try, but we were stuffed after the meal. I'm defiantly returning and trying other items. ”
“ Sovereign Modern Thai is a great spot in downtown San Diego, especially if you love spice! They don't shy away from heat for the hotter levels, which I really appreciated. The fried rice had the perfect balance of savory and sweet, and the Hat Yai was super crispy with a sauce that paired perfectly with the chicken. I'd recommend making a reservation, as it can get busy, and while there's some street parking nearby, it can be tricky depending on the time. They also have nice drink options, like a refreshing Thai iced tea, which complements the meal well. If you're craving flavorful Thai food in San Diego, Sovereign Modern Thai is definitely worth checking out! ”
